I don't think it's really a good idea to use the web with surf shield turned off, especially when downloading files. Chosen solution Did you try to set the browser.download.manager.scanWhenDone pref to false on the about:config page? The same amount of bandwidth was being used now listed by Netbalancer as Service Traffic. As for Process Explorer I can no longer find the firefox.exe process after closing Firefox. I started a download with FDM and as you can see Firefox is also downloading from the same server.
