This cleared the problem for me too. Disabling ExtensionsSimilar to plugins, extensions are also additional applications installed on the browser. Like you I work in IT, and chrome throughout our client base is noticeably slower. Yup, bitdefender seems to have been the culprit.

Chrome had always ran really well for me.... However once you try to do multiple things with a average or below average computer Chrome takes up so much resources that you can barely do anything else. I have chrome version 37 on windows 8.1. More about the author I have a Haswell i7 PC with 16Gb of RAM with an SSD & Windows 8.1 all fully updated and Chrome x64 slows down like 1990 and Windows 3.
