The thought then might be server/bandwidth issues. Attempted to download/install Soluto as suggested and ran into problems. Just from your descrition I would suspect malware might be your problem although it may be something else. If you had two firewalls running at the same time and you disabled one then you did the right thing.
the HD access is defiantly more than has been normal on this machine... I can't think of a legitimate reason that it would turn itself off, though, outside of some sort of malware.
