I can't think of a legitimate reason that it would turn itself off, though, outside of some sort of malware. Can't find your answer ? If you are going to run chkdsk you should use the /r switch. May not be in your case, but if you can't find anything through Taskman, then i would look there.
If there's constant disk activity then it should show up in Resource Monitor as well.
